4. How to Store Your Documents and Access Your Life Insurance:

Like your AHD, Will, and Estate Plan, keep one set of life insurance records in your home, where your beneficiary or executor will have access to it. Keep an additional copy in a secure storage device, like a safety deposit box.

Life Insurance Document Checklist:

Important life insurance information includes:

  • The full name of the life insurance company that issued the policy
  • The address of the home office of the company that issued the policy
  • The name and U.S. headquarters of the group, if the issuing company belongs to a group of companies
  • The policy number, including the policy number of the life insurance policy that pays off the loan, if different
  • The amount of the death benefit
  • The type of policy: term or whole life
  • The date the policy was issued
  • The lending institution through which you obtained the life insurance
  • The number and issue date of the loan
  • The name of the person or office to contact when it is time to file a claim
  • The name and address of the agent/broker who sold you the policy
