First 24 Hours

A loved one’s passage is more than difficult.  Managing arrangements alone can be overwhelming.

Passare is here to make it easier for you and your family.  Here are our recommendations for what to do within the first 24 hours:

0-1 Hours

For an unexpected death, call 911 to notify the police and emergency medical team, who will determine the time of death. They will also tell you how to manage the removal of the deceased’s body.

If your loved one has endured a prolonged illness under Hospice care, contact your medical professional.

1-4 Hours

Contact your immediate family members and ask them to help you contact close family and relatives.

4-12 Hours

Locate final End of Life documents such as a Will, Estate Plan, Advance Healthcare Directive (AHD) or any funeral arrangement plans or documents. If you are not aware if a document exists, you may want to talk to a trusted friend, relative, or faith-based leader for help locating a funeral director or service provider.

12-24+ Hours

Try to take care of yourself by getting rest and nutrition.

Collect specific information about your loved one. You will need this information to schedule a meeting with a funeral service provider:

  • Full name of the deceased
  • Marital status, including Marriage Certificate
  • Parent and children full names
  • Immediate family member names
  • Place and date of birth including Birth Certificate
  • Social Security Number
  • Veteran’s discharge papers as applicable (DD-214)
